Something Old… New… Borrowed… & Blue

You’ve probably heard of the generations-old tradition, “Something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue,” but have you considered what new additions and family heirlooms you’ll carry with you on your wedding day?

This wedding tradition derives from an old 1883 English rhyme that incorporates four good luck items for a bride on her wedding day. From family keepsakes, to a new wedding dress, to a vintage blue get-away car, there are so many different options to choose from when deciding on what four items you’ll incorporate into your wedding day to encompass each of the meanings behind something old… something new… something borrowed… and something blue.

Something old…

Something old represents continuity typically from the bride’s family and traditions – During my dad’s Father-of-the-Bride speech, he made a toast to us starting our lives together as husband and wife with a keepsake from my childhood. While our family was stationed in Germany, my parents purchased a Nuernberg Bridal Cup at a local shop and they knew it would be something very special to use at both of their daughters’ wedding days many years down the road. If you haven’t heard of the legend of the Nuernberg Bridal Cup, make sure you check it out – it’s a longstanding tradition and sweet story!

Whether it be old jewelry, an heirloom, or an old tradition, consider some of these unique touches to your wedding day to incorporate your something old:

  • Heirloom jewelry such as a ring, necklace, locket, earrings, or bracelet
  • Something old sewn onto your dress
  • Bridal bouquet accessory like a father’s cuff-link, grandmother’s broach, etc.
  • Vintage ring pillow

Something new…

Something new brings about optimism for the future – You’ll likely have a few new things on your wedding day: new shoes, new jewelry, new HUSBAND/WIFE (!!). Make your something new special with something that you’ll cherish forever and could one day become a loved one’s something borrowed or old!

  • Wedding dress
  • Custom jacket to wear at the reception
  • Dazzling belt to compliment your dress
  • Bridal shoes

Something borrowed…

Something borrowed brings the newlyweds good luck from borrowed happiness from those they love – Check out these ideas when deciding on your something borrowed:

  • Grandmother’s stole – especially great for a winter wedding!
  • Heirloom veil
  • A loved one’s wedding dress
  • Wedding vow or reading from relative or friend’s wedding

And finally, Something blue…

Something blue symbolizes purity, love, and fidelity – could it get any sweeter than having your beloved pup dress up with a blue bow-tie and handsome wrist cuffs?! Here are a few other unique ideas to consider when picking out your something blue:

  • Blue-stoned jewelry or hair piece
  • Perfume, Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue
  • Vintage blue get-away vehicle
  • A special relative’s blue pocket square or tie – perhaps sewn into the inside of your wedding dress

There are countless ideas to choose from that will inspire your marriage – But when deciding on your something old… new… borrowed… and blue, be sure to make it special and significant to you and your loved ones on your very own big day.
